‘Haven’t sworn to just go to Delhi’: What farm protesters think of talks with govt, police action

Hundreds of protesting farmers have been camping along the Shambhu border for a week. Stopped at the barricades by the police, they have put their march to Delhi on hold temporarily amid talks between their leaders and the government. The fourth round of talks were held on Sunday.

Harjeet Singh, a farmer from Punjab’s Sirhind, compared the police deployment at the protest site to the Indo-Pak border. “Don’t we have the right to put forth our demands? We are not demanding a law on MSP only for ourselves,” he told Newslaundry. “Some youngsters have insisted on going to Delhi…but we are waiting for the directions of our leaders. If our views are not accepted, only then we will go to Delhi…we haven’t sworn to just go to Delhi.”

We spoke to several other protesters in the area on their demands, the actions of the police force, and the approach taken by the government.
