‘MSP will also benefit govt’: Farmers on demand for MSP law, ‘corporate loot’

A law guaranteeing minimum support price for agricultural produce has been a long-standing demand of farmers. It was also one of the conditions for calling off the year-long protests to repeal the three farm laws in December 2021.

But despite more than two years of the Modi government’s promise and the formation of a committee in July 2022 to ensure fair implementation of the MSP, the demand is yet to materialise. The farmers have now once again taken to the streets demanding a law on MSP. 

At the Shambhu border in Haryana’s Ambala, where thousands of farmers have camped, enroute to the national capital for ‘Dilli chalo’ protests, the farmers told Newslaundry why is MSP the right of farmers across India, and that it will not only benefit farmers but also the government. 

The farmers also spoke about the need for loan waivers, governments’ complacency, the issue of capitalist takeover of the agriculture sector, and the “false narratives” peddled by a section of the media.   

Agricultural economist Devendra Sharma also spoke to Newslaundry on the significance of MSP.
