TV Newsance 330 | Savarna khatre mein hai? Primetime hysteria over UGC’s equity rules
This week on TV Newsance, we look at how primetime studios have successfully manufactured a brand-new existential crisis. Move over Hindu khatre mein hai; it's now time for Savarna khatre mein hai. We decode the UGC’s new equity guidelines and why they’ve left our brave, tireless anchors very, very concerned.
Godi favourites like Chitra Tripathi, Aman Chopra, Navika Kumar and Anjana Om Kashyap were out in full force this week, battling the “injustice” meted out to savarnas and the “divisions” these guidelines were fomenting amongst Hindus. It is a touching concern from the same anchors who spend all day doing ‘Hindu-Muslim’ gymnastics. We never see this level of panic when it comes to real issues like unemployment, air pollution, mob violence, etc.
Instead of discussing how caste discrimination operates inside college campuses or what these new regulations entail, the studios stuck to their usual script. They framed their primetime debates with inane taglines like Savarna Virodhi Toolkit and Hindu Ekta Khatre Mein Hai.
The episode also breaks down:
➜ What do the UGC’s new equity guidelines actually say?
➜ Do the new guidelines actually benefit SCs, STs and OBCs?
➜ The shocking reality of caste representation in India.
