Inside Jharkhand’s assembly gherao: Lathicharge, tear gas and conflicting claims
Thousands of students from all districts of Jharkhand marched on the state assembly in Ranchi on Monday, demanding the cancellation of exams conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission over alleged paper leaks and irregularities. They also demanded a CBI probe into the allegations.
Despite prohibitory orders under BNSS section 163 and heavy barricading with barbed wire, protesters broke through the security cordons and reached the assembly complex. The police responded with water cannons, tear gas and lathicharge, leaving several students injured. The police claimed that protesters pelted stones, injuring several security personnel.
So, what really happened on the ground? Who used force, who resorted to violence, and how did the protest escalate?
