Smoking is a ‘choice’ for men, but a ‘character flaw’ for women?

A boy smokes. A girl smokes. Why do we judge them differently?

If a man is seen smoking, it is often brushed off as a personal choice. But when a woman lights a cigarette, she can quickly be labelled ‘shameless’, ‘bad’ or ‘characterless’.

We asked people a simple question: What if the woman smoking was your daughter or daughter-in-law?

The answers exposed a stark double standard – from concerns about ‘culture’ and ‘character’ to demands that women be controlled, punished or even driven out of their village. Some, however, questioned why the same rules don’t apply to men.

So, is smoking really the issue, or is it who is doing the smoking?
