Two Dalit students attacked in Lucknow
Two Dalit students of the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) in Lucknow were allegedly beaten up by a group of 25 students with lathis on Sunday. The victims, Shreyat Bouddh and Ashwini Ranjan, said the assault took place around 9 pm, when they went outside the campus.
“While we were walking, we were stopped by other students from the university who started beating us with lathis and hurled abuses at us,” Bouddh told Newslaundry. “They told us, ‘Don’t ever speak against Kamal Jaiswal, head of the Department of Applied Animal Science’,” Bouddh said.
“The professor has an anti-Dalit mindset and used to speak against minorities in class and in general. We used to counter his arguments,” Bouddh, a PhD scholar in the university, said. Ashwini Ranjan just finished his Masters in Forensics.
After escaping from the attackers, the students went to the hospital for treatment and made their way to the Ashiana police station where they filed a first information report against Prof Kamal Jaiswal, Upendra Singh Thekedar, Shashank Tiwari, Rishi Shukla and 25 others.
Newslaundry attempted to contact Prof Jaiswal but the calls went unanswered. The report will be updated as and when we get his response.
