Journalist J Dey murder case: Chhota Rajan convicted, scribe Jigna Vora acquitted
The Special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act court on Wednesday convicted gangster Chhota Rajan and eight others for the murder of Mid Day journalist Jyotirmoy Dey. The journalist was murdered on June 11, 2011, while he was on his way home, Hindustan Times reported.
Former Deputy Editor of Asian Age Jigna Vora, also accused in the case, has been acquitted due to lack of evidence.
According to news reports that quoted Central Bureau of Investigation as their source, Dey was writing two books on the underworld for which he was meeting members of all the gangs, including those of Dawood Ibrahim. “The agency claimed that Rajan did not appreciate Dey’s connections with the Dawood gang,” HT reported. Rajan had told a journalist that he suspected Dey was working for D-company run by Ibrahim, Live Law reported.
The quantum of punishment is yet to be announced.
Reacting to the verdict, Sachin Kalbag, Dey’s boss at Mid Day at the time of the scribe’s murder, tweeted that the judgement would bring closure to Shubha Sharma, Dey’s wife.
