NL Dhulai
A review of NL Hafta by Naman
Hi NL team,
I am a subscriber and a shubhchintak.
I see that there are many subscriber-based media outlets that have come up in the last 5 years or so, and feel that NL, while it does commendable work, doesn’t have the kind of reach and hence revenue that some of the other organisations may.
Here are a few suggestions and some advice:
1. Instead of having fixed categories such as disruptor, liberator and game changer, you should also have options such as ‘pay to read an article’, say by a guest writer.
2. NL Hafta can be sold separately by charging listener for each Hafta episode that they want to listen to. This is your best product, use it well.
3. You really need to be seen and heard more. If a Dhruv Rathee, essentially a one-man show, can have a million YouTube subscribers or The Wire can have close to a million subscribers, I am sure you can too. The more visibility you have, the better your subscription figures would be.
4. IMP: I tried recommending NL to family and friends. They all had the same feedback that NL reeks of elitism. A bunch of arm-chair critics commenting on things that don’t really impact them. Initially, when I had started listening to NL Hafta, I felt the same. You should think about that.
5. I suggest that you invite people from other professions on your Hafta and not just journalists. Get an economist, an expert on rural issues, sociology etc, it will add more variety.
A word of appreciation: Manisha, I am sure you’ll end up becoming one of the best journalists in the country. Abhinandan, thanks for making NL Hafta entertaining with your quirky sense of humour. Anand, man, you are a walking encyclopaedia and Madhu, thanks for all the maturity and experience that you bring in.
Thanks,
Naman
