'The golden age of nonsense': Watch Hasan Minhaj explain how the news industry is being destroyed

"Think about where you get your news from. Cable news, Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp — we are living in the golden age of nonsense."

In the latest episode of Patriot Act, Hasan Minhaj tackles the destruction of the news industry. More than ever, he points out, people think they're "in the know" thanks to the multiple sources of "news" that exist, but, "every scroll is...high-fructose bullshit and it's making us crazy."

But there is one source, especially in the US: local newspapers. A higher percentage of Americans trust local newspapers over national TV news channels. But local newspapers are dying, "an essential service that could disappear".

And Minhaj says there are two things we need to talk about that are spurring on this demise. "Private equity and hedge funds. They're a huge reason why local papers might go extinct, because they see their failure as an opportunity."
