Reporters Without Orders Ep 202: ‘Kya Bole UP’ on Doordarshan, divides in right-wing ideology

This week, host Ayush Tiwari is joined by Newslaundry’s Basant Kumar and Prateek Goyal.

The conversation begins with this piece by Basant and Ashwine Kumar Singh on an Uttar Pradesh election show – Kya Bole UP – on Doordarshan which features BJP affiliates passed off as “common citizens”.

“The show has crossed the line of ethics and is presenting more of a campaign for the current government,” Basant says. “Doordarshan surely runs on taxpayer money but it serves the government, not the people, in the current scenario.”

Prateek takes the panel through his report on the “Bulli Bai” app, and what it reveals about “Trads” and “Raaytas” in the right-wing ecosystem. He also talks about how young people are drawn into the cycle of internet abuse: “They find it fun and amusing to troll and abuse people on the internet. But what they don’t see is the hate that has been embedded in them from an early age which leads them to such online crimes.”

This, and a lot more as they talk about what made news, what didn’t, and what shouldn’t have.

Tune in.
