‘Digital Personal Data Protection Act a tool to dilute RTI’

Rights activists are up in arms against the implementation of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, accusing the government of using provisions of the new legislation to weaken the Right to Information. 

On March 25, activists from 34 civil society organisations met Opposition leaders to discuss the alleged threats the legislation poses to exposing corruption, data privacy among other concerns. They also urged political parties to oppose the act tooth and nail in Parliament.

“The government is using the DPDP [Act] as a weapon to control information, and common citizens, journalists, civil society organizations will all come under its purview,” RTI activist Anjali Bhardwaj told Newslaundry.
