Sept 1, 2025: Delhi breathing easy, but life expectancy cut short ‘by 8 years’

On Monday, Newslaundry visited Dilli Haat, which attracts tourists from across India and abroad. The AQI at the nearest air quality monitoring station in Lodhi Road was pegged at 85, or ‘satisfactory’. But the monsoon may have a role to play.

The AQI is expected to worsen this month. 

A recent report by the University of Chicago has warned that the average life expectancy of Delhi residents could be reduced by more than eight years due to air pollution. It also stated that between 1998 and 2023, pollution levels in Delhi rose by 56.9 percent, making the city the epicentre of India’s air quality crisis.

Another study highlighted that Delhi’s pollution crisis is worsening due to microplastics in the air. According to the report, the average daily exposure to microplastics increased from 10.7 particles during colder months to 21.1 particles in the warmer season.
