Dhanyavaad Modiji, for keeping independent journalism premium with 18% GST
Days after the GST cuts, India’s corporate bigwigs rushed to say thank you.
“Dhanyavaad Modi ji. Next-gen GST – a historic step towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” declared Assocham.
“A landmark step for affordable healthcare,” gushed the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance.
“From the bottom of our hearts to the heads of our nation,” said Hatsun Agro Product.
“Thank you, hon’ble prime minister. Simpler GST, stronger businesses,” cheered CII.
Some brands decided to get a little more creative with their gratitude.
“Thank you, PM Modi ji, for supporting India’s dreams,” said The Sleep Company.
“Startups rise on the wings of tax reform,” promised aviation firm Sarla.
And of course, “Dhanyavaad Modiji,” said Hatti Kaapi, “brewing trust, brewing pride one cup at a time.”
The government announced these cuts on September 3, 2025, following GST Council recommendations. The move, pitched as a response to slowdown fears and the need to spur retail spending, takes effect on September 22. A carefully calibrated dose of stimulus, with corporate India playing the chorus.
So we thought, why not join the party?
Dhanyavaad Modi ji – for keeping GST on news subscriptions untouched at a neat 18 percent. That is the same rate one would pay for premium goods – a 65-inch LED television, a French door fridge, or even a compact SUV.
The highest GST slab of 40 percent remains for ultraluxury or sin goods – products considered harmful to health or society. Thankfully, journalism isn’t a sin yet, but due to this bold reform, free-spirited public interest journalism remains a luxury for many.
Unless, of course, it is bankrolled by government ads featuring your radiant smile.
Sadly, that’s not us. Newslaundry doesn’t run government ads. We rely on our subscribers.
And since free-spirited public journalism costs a premium, we’re marking the occasion with a special 25 percent off subscription offer till the end of the week, just in time for Modiji’s birthday.
