The Narendra Modi government introduced the Goods and Services Tax in 2017, hailing it as ‘good and simple tax’. But the GST system remains complex. Eight years later, even the tax rates for essential goods are not simplified. In the 55th GST council meeting, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced new tax rates for different flavours of popcorn.
