On October 22, an edited video of the narco-analysis test of Krishna – Rajesh Talwar’s dental assistant – mysteriously appeared on YouTube. In the video Krishna claims he was asked to take the blame for the murders by the Central Bureau of Investigation’s first investigating team. The provenance of this video is unknown. However, only the CBI has custody of all scientific tests.

Following the video, mysterious “leak” articles such as this and this appeared in various news outlets suggesting something sinister.

Arun Kumar, who was joint director of the CBI at the time of the investigation, was quoted in media saying the video is “not authentic”.

I am upset and disgusted that the premier investigating agency of our country, in which we all repose our faith, can resort to underhand tactics such as concealing facts, leaking misleading information and worse. The list of their misdemeanors in the Aarushi-Hemraj murders is endless and enough to make anyone cry. But that is a separate story.

Fortunately for ordinary citizens the CBI routinely victimises, its attempt to mislead the public can backfire, as it has in this case.

Even in this edited video that is supposed to be proof of Krishna’s innocence, he admits to his involvement in the crimes – a fact being missed in the brouhaha about what Arun Kumar said to Krishna.

The CBI never submitted the scientific tests showing involvement of Krishna, Raj Kumar and Vijay Mandal in the crime nor those exonerating Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, to the court. Why did they not? And if the evidence was irrelevant then, who is leaking it now and at whose behest?

Now in a new twist, the CBI says it does not have complete raw footage of the narco-analysis test of Krishna conducted at the Forensic Science Laboratory, Bangalore in its records.

If this is true, the agency needs to urgently put its house in order. It is inconceivable that the premier investigating agency of this country is incapable of keeping its records securely. Such a state of affairs would severely compromise its ability to do a fair and honest investigation in any case. This should be completely unacceptable to any concerned citizen of this country.
