What’s the reward for doing good journalism? Awards? Respect? In the case of Amy Goodman, it is the possibility of having to serve a prison term.

Goodman, an award winning journalist and the host of an independent US news program Democracy Now!, was charged with participation of riots for filming an attack on Native American-led anti-pipeline protesters against North Dakota Access Pipeline on Friday.

On September 3, she had filmed the protesters being attacked by dogs, unleashed by security guards of the pipeline company.

The $3.8 billion pipeline is being constructed to transport half a million barrels of crude oil daily from North Dakota’s Bakken rock formation to Illinois. The oil would then be shipped to different global markets.

The protests against the pipeline is being carried out by Native American Sioux tribe, as the pipeline is to pass through their burial ground and sacred sites. The locals fear that any rupture in the pipeline will pollute river Missouri.

Goodman will surrender to North Dakota authorities today. A local judge, John Grinsteiner will decide if there is enough evidence to charge her.
