As India celebrated its 72nd Republic Day on Tuesday, lakhs of farmers who have been protesting against the Narendra Modi government’s new farm laws along Delhi’s border for nearly two months marched into the national capital. They were expected to start their planned tractor rally at around noon, after the Republic Day parade on Rajpath in central Delhi had ended. But at around 8 am some of the farmers began to remove the barricades that the police had put up overnight along the proposed route of the rally. Not long after, violence erupted as the police lathicharged and teargassed the protesters at some places.

By 2 pm, some of the protesting farmers had reached near central Delhi. At other places, the tractor parade continued peacefully along the designated route.

Newslaundry’s Basant Kumar, Nidhi Suresh, Muhammad Tahir Shabbir, and Aditya Varier are on the ground covering the rally. Here are some visuals they have captured.
