Hafta 371: Dissecting the BJP triumph, Cong rout and AAP wave

The podcast where we discuss the news of the week.

WrittenBy:NL Team
Date:

This week on NL Hafta, Newslaundry’s Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande and Anand Vardhan are joined by Jatinder Kaur Tur, journalist at the Caravan, and Sandesh Prabhudesai, editor of Goa News and author of Ajeeb Goa’s Gajab Politics - Goa Elections: A Perspective.

Discussing the election results, Jatinder Kaur Tur says that people in Punjab were disillusioned with Captain Amarinder Singh for “not living up to his promise and consorting with the Akalis”, but that the Congress should have given him an honorable exit. While Abhinandan disagrees, Manisha adds that a Dalit CM candidate by the Congress might not have helped the party as “Dalits don’t consolidate in Punjab as they do in UP” and “Jat Sikhs control narratives and panchayats”.

On the Goa elections, Sandesh Prabhudesai states that even though AAP made inroads with two seats, the “Delhi model” didn’t work in the state. Anand Vardhan moves on to discuss UP and says that “a sizable percentage of UP voters thought that it (BJP’s) was the government that was working”.

This and a lot more, only on NL Hafta.
