Hafta 407: Judicial appointments, transparency, FIFA in Qatar

The podcast where we discuss the news of the week.

It’s an all-Newslaundry panel this week as Abhinandan Sekhri is joined by Raman Kirpal, Manisha Pande, Anand Vardhan and Mehraj D Lone.

The conversation begins with the issue of appointment of judges as Abhinandan talks about the national judicial appointments commission and the collegium system. While Mehraj says he doesn’t support the idea of judges appointing themselves, Raman suggests a more transparent method must be found as it may be worse to allow the government to control this.

“To have legitimacy in something, it needs to reflect the will of the people,” says Mehraj, as the panel discusses the nuances of decision-making processes.

The discussion then shifts to Qatar and how FIFA might be a cover for repressive regimes.
