This week as India’s top athletes continued their protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar against the Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for alleged sexual harassment, Times Now reporters were running around chasing Arvind Kejriwal’s car, and getting into scuffles. Meanwhile, Sudhir was busy asking not-so-difficult questions to the WFI chief.

It was Press Freedom Day on May 3. And that got us thinking about how critical is news, and a free press for a democracy – which ranks 161 out of 180 countries in the 2023 Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders. In this episode, we take a close look at it.

We also dissect why the media is called the ‘fourth pillar of democracy’, the duties of the other three pillars, and how they all work together.
