On April 1, Newslaundry and the Internet Freedom Foundation hosted FoE Con 2023, a forum that brought together media personalities and leading voices in the legal sphere to map the media and regulatory framework in contemporary India.
The session “Platforms and elections” was moderated by Manisha Pande, who was joined by Supreme Court lawyers Meenakshi Arora and Huzefa Ahmadi, and Logically CEO Lyric Jain.
The 2024 elections in India and the US will be a crucial moment for the future of the two largest democracies, and will highlight the role of social media companies in combating disinformation and the importance of media literacy. The panel discussion focussed on the amount of fake news circulated during each poll season, and the inability to effectively counter such disinformation.
The panel discussed the way forward, comparing the preparedness of digital platforms in the US and other parts of the world.
