Hafta 471: Pakistan polls, Uttarakhand’s Uniform Civil Code

The podcast where we discuss the news of the week.

This week, Newslaundry’s Manisha Pande, Raman Kirpal and Jayashree Arunachalam are joined by journalist Nirupama Subramanian and Supreme Court advocate-on-record Anas Tanwir.

Nirupama explains the national and provincial elections in Pakistan. She says cutting off internet and telecommunication in the country was geared towards preventing a high turnout.

“It was being said that if a lot of people turned out, it was more likely that they would be PTI supporters,” she adds, suggesting the popularity ex-PM Imran Khan still enjoys in the state. She also explains what Nawaz Sharif as prime minister might mean for India.

The panel discusses Uttarakhand passing the Uniform Civil Code and how it’s not quite ‘uniform’ since it excludes tribals and LGBTQ+ communities, and also does not touch the concept of Hindu Undivided Family.

Anas says the registration of live-in relationships shows the “controlling” nature of the government which wants to control “the most private aspect” of our lives.

““How will they determine if someone is in a live-in relationship or not?” he asks. “...Will it be by seeing if they sleep on the same bed?”

This and a lot more. Tune in!
