Hindutva vs Dravidianism: Why Tamil Nadu resists the BJP

With the Lok Sabha polls just around the corner, many in Tamil Nadu seem to perceive this as an ideological fight between Dravidianism and Hindutva.

The Dravidian ideology is based on Periyar EV Ramasamy’s teachings of social justice, equality and Tamil nationalism. Periyar, who is widely known as ‘Thanthai’ Periyar, is considered the father of the Dravidian movement.

The Hindutva ideology, which is in stark contrast to the principles that Dravidianism stands by, is based on Savarkar’s idea of Hindu nationalism, wherein, he discredited Christians and Muslims of not being true Indians unless they renounce their faiths, which he claimed are not Indic.
