Newsance 287: New Delhi stampede and the media cover-up

Your weekly dose of all the insanity that passes off as news on TV.

This week we saw how in the light of a major stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, the government was more concerned with what was getting out in the media rather than helping the victims. By first restricting the media’s access and then trying to limit what could be posted online, the government tried to control what people could see, hear, and read about the mishap.

It was also revealed this week that the water at the Mahakumbh had high levels of faecal bacteria, making it unsafe for bathing. Unsurprisingly, what followed was official denial. As expected, instead of questioning the government, our news anchors were once again focussed on attacking opposition leaders!

As Ranveer Allahbadia continued to make headlines this week, join us in revisiting our take from 2020 on how abusive, aggressive and servile one needed to be on TV News.
