The myth of the apolitical Indian

Being apolitical is an illusion. Politics is the price of your groceries, your roads and the speed of your Wi-Fi. Why is being apolitical a privilege? And why are we told not to “politicise” issues that affect us all?

How many times have you heard someone say, “I don’t get into politics. I just focus on my career.”

Or when there are protests, you hear people ask, “Why does everything have to be politicised?”

It may sound balanced. But let us be honest for a second.

In India, being “apolitical” is a luxury. It is also an illusion, and frankly, it is impossible.

Every week on Let Me Explain, we break down complex things – a law, a court judgment, or a government policy.

But today, I want to make a simple submission. Being apolitical is plain laziness, and complaining about “politicising” an issue, any issue, is complete hogwash.
