The Delhi High Court convicted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar for “criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity, acts against communal harmony” in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Kumar has been given a life sentence and has been told to surrender by December 31, Economic Times reports.

Kumar had been acquitted in 2013 in the case pertaining to the murder of five members of a Sikh family in Delhi. The CBI filed a petition challenging the verdict.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Kamal Nath will be sworn in as CM of Madhya Pradesh at 1.30 pm today. Nath’s role in the pogrom is well-documented. As a Caravan article points out, “each time Gandhi tries to explain the party’s involvement in the killings, Nath’s record tarnishes his credentials.”  The article states that during the 1984 massacre of Sikhs that took place in Delhi, it was Kamal Nath who led a murderous mob that burnt two Sikhs to death within a kilometre of the parliament.

Kamal Nath’s role has also been spoken about in the book “When a Tree Shook Delhi” by Manoj Mitta and HS Phoolka, which discusses the 1984 carnage and its aftermath.
