BJP president Amit Shah’s son Jay on Monday filed a Rs 100-crore defamation case against The Wire, its editor, owner and the author of a report revealing huge increase in the turnover of Jay’s company after Narendra Modi’s election as prime minister in 2014. The case, filed in an Ahmedabad court, is set to be heard on October 11.

The website’s founding editor Siddharth Varadarajan said: “The Wire won’t be intimidated by (the) Modi government’s attack on media freedom.”

The story on Jay Amitbhai Shah, which went viral on the internet, detailed the growth of his company, Temple Enterprise Private, from revenue of Rs 50,000 in 2014-2015 to Rs 80.5 crore in 2015-2016. It also revealed loans received by companies connected to Jay Shah, based on documents filed with the Registrar of Companies.

The Congress and AAP lashed out at the BJP after the revelations. On Sunday, Congress leader Kapil Sibal wondered if Modi would call for an investigation, while Union minister Piyush Goyal defended Jay Shah.

“The most astonishing aspect of the allegation is how a stock trading company got permission to set up a windmill project in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh… It appears the government was interested in spiking up the revenues of the company because it gave Rs 10.35 crore as loan to a company which had no prior experience in the energy sector,” Sibal said.

Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta will represent Jay, the New Indian Express reported.
