Following yesterday’s Supreme Court (SC) verdict which found her guilty in a disproportionate assets case, VK Sasikala’s dreams of becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu now lie in tatters. But in her downfall, she has managed to crack up the internet after she performed a dramatic sabadham (pledge) at the memorial of her mentor and former CM, J Jayalalithaa.
The media must be free and fair, uninfluenced by corporate or state interests. That's why you, the public, need to pay to keep news free.
ContributeThe day began poorly for Sasikala when the SC rejected her plea seeking time before she surrendered. Thus began the ominous journey from her residence at Poes Garden in Chennai to Parappana Agrahara Prison in Bengaluru – under intense media scrutiny, of course. Instead of driving straight to prison, Sasikala made a couple of stops on the way.
First, she got off at the Amma memorial at Chennai’s Marina Beach. After paying a floral tribute to the late CM, she murmured a few words and then slammed the ground thrice, as if taking a pledge.
Some wondered what exactly Sasikala was trying to accomplish with the thumping.
But as baffling as the images were, they made for scintillating meme-fodder.
One meme definitely stood out:
