It’s a doggone crime

Are you a hybrid dog in Delhi? A Siberian Husky to be precise, who goes for pee walks with his owner in the morning?  If you are, this city is not safe for you (apart from being too hot).

Today’s newspapers are all awash with news of Zorra (Indian Express)/Zoru ( Hindustan Times)/Zoro ( The Hindu), a pet Siberian Husky was “kidnapped” in Vasant Kunj today. Zorro was on page four of Indian Express and The Hindu, page two of Hindustan Times and on page one of The Times of India. Which just goes to show that elite, pedigreed dogs are more newsworthy than most humans in this country. It also makes you wonder just how bored newsrooms all across Delhi were yesterday that this kidnapping got as much coverage as it did.

The canine was abducted by alleged “cattle thieves” who were fleeing after stealing a pig, presumably because their golden Innova was too small for actual cattle. Or maybe they were scared of Gau Suraksha — after all “cow and its progeny” can potentially be a pretty vast category.

Zorra/Zoro/Zoru, in a brave attempt to rescue his fellow four-legged friend, barked angrily at the kidnappers and chased them. However, the insensitive goons saw this as an opportunity to steal another ‘cattle’, a furrier variety that would fit in their getaway vehicle, and so they got away. With the husky.

No ransom calls have been made so far, according to reports, but any information about the dog that can cost up to Rs 30,000  may be forwarded to Aftab Khan. If being on page one of ToI and being featured as prominently as the dog has in other newspapers doesn’t help retrieve the canine, then that’s more of a slap upon newspaper readership than data from the Indian Readership Survey.

(In case you want a dog that won’t be considered worth kidnapping or cost about 10k more than a month’s salary of an entry level journalist, contact Friendicoes).
