Earlier this evening, Arnab Goswami held a meeting with his Delhi and Mumbai correspondents. He had an announcement to make: Goswami, Editor in Chief of Times Now, the anchor of the channel’s most popular show Newshour and the creator of “Super Primetime” was stepping down. “The game has just begun,” Goswami told his colleagues repeatedly.

In a meeting that lasted almost an hour, Goswami said that he was bored with the work at Times Now and that he was looking to do something new. He did clarify that he was not leaving either the news business or television media. He also stressed repeatedly that “independent media is going to thrive”, a sentiment that warms the cockles of our heart. Contrary to speculation on social media, we can confirm that Goswami is not joining Newslaundry.

Goswami began his career in print journalism, when he joined The Telegraph in Kolkata in 1995. In less than a year, he moved to television news, when he joined New Delhi Television (NDTV), which then produced news programmes. He left NDTV to join Times Now when it launched in 2006. Since then, he has been the face of the channel and it’s fair to say that he changed how debates on news channels were conducted with his intensely-dramatic Newshour shows. His style of anchoring was not only followed by the majority of Indian news channels, it even got noticed all the way in America, by satirist John Oliver.

Meanwhile, Times Now has been flashing “Arnab is Back” because Goswami will indeed be back — from an eight-day leave.

There is a good possibility that today’s Newshour will be his farewell show although this is not confirmed. One thing is for certain: the ratings for tonight’s show are going to hit an all-new high.
