Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hae Mushkil has been at the centre of controversies for some time now. What started off as a demand to boycott the movie for casting Pakistani actor Fawad Khan has now invited fresh trouble over dialogue by actress Anushka Sharma’s character ‘Alizeh’.

“Mohammad Rafi? Woh gaate kam, rote zyada the na?” jokes Alizeh when Ranbir’s character Ayan boasts that his voice was like Rafi’s.

Many took umbrage with what they saw as a slight at Rafi. Take for instance, the Director General of Police, Goa, and amateur flautist Muktesh Chander, who tweeted:

Chander wasn’t the only one hurt. Shahid Rafi, the musician’s son told the Indian Express:

My father was an institution. He was a very down-to-earth person. He was like a saint. People still worship him. Nobody in the industry says anything bad about my father. This dialogue is an insult. It is stupid. The man who wrote this dialogue is stupid. My father sang for Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Joy Mukherjee, Biswajeet Singh. From love songs to qawwali, he has sung it all. It is ridiculous to say whatever has been said in the film.
