Tarek Fatah, Canadian author and columnist, was allegedly involved in a physical altercation with students at Panjab University in Chandigarh, Punjab. Fatah had been invited to the campus to deliver a TEDx talk on Balochistan scheduled for Thursday, which has been cancelled.

The incident occurred when Fatah was having an informal interaction with a few students, during which a librarian came and the students “rose up to show respect”, according to Gagandeep Singh Dhillon, a PhD scholar in geography, who was present at the scene. Dhillon claims Fatah told the students “Indians need to stop giving such treatment to their seniors”. A fracas ensued, during which Fatah reportedly called Dhillon a “Khalistani” and another student named Mustafa a “Pakistani terrorist” and “an anti-national”. Harbir Singh, who claims to have been accompanying Fatah at the time, wrote in a Facebook post that a student “flew into such a rage that he started pushing and shoving Tarek Fatah”.

So far, video evidence of Fatah being assaulted has not surfaced. However, in a bid to aid those with a sluggish imagination, a couple of online news websites (Janta Ka Reporter and Muslim Mirror) who reported about it carried an image with Fatah’s face photoshopped on an unknown person being assaulted.

Muslim Mirror even captioned the picture as “Tarek Fatah being beaten up by students of Punjab University”. And strangely enough, Fatah himself tweeted the Muslim Mirror article, tagging Shekhar Gupta, former Editor-in-chief of The Indian Express and Panjab University alumnus, asking him “does this look like your Alma Mater?”

Given the picture is clearly photoshopped and its source is unknown, it is quite possible that it isn’t even from a college, let alone Gupta’s alma mater.
