Airtel Vs TRAI: Telecom files affidavit against regulator

Alleging “perpetuating illegality” by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Bharti Airtel has filed an affidavit in Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) on Tuesday.

The telco has accused TRAI of allowing Reliance Jio to break rules around “anti-competitive” promotional offers. According to Bharti Airtel, TRAI allowed Reliance Jio to provide free voice and data service beyond the 90 day promotional offer.

Two weeks back Bharti Airtel had filed a plea with TDSAT urging it to direct TRAI to stop what it called Jio’spredatory” voice and data services. The accusing teleco alleged that said services were offered below the set interconnect charge set by the regulator. The current interconnect charge is 14 paise per minute.

Earlier TRAI had found that Jio’s initial Welcome offer that ended on December 3 did not break any rules. Jio has claimed it complies with all rules, and that predatory pricing comes into effect only when an operator has dominant market share which it doesn’t.

TRAI has sought additional time from TDSAT to look into Jio’s latest promotional tariff plan, Happy New Year.
