Was Trump’s LL Bean Tweet an endorsement or a long con?

There are few things in this world to make you feel better about demonetisation, or the existence of Jallikattu than following US politics right now. Somewhere in between verbally carpet-bombing the mainstream media and surreptitiously dismantling Obamacare, US President-elect Donald Trump tweeted his most innocuous tweet yet

Linda Bean, heir to the Maine retailer known for preppy jackets and wading boots had donated anywhere between $30,000 to $60,000 to a political action committee that supported Trump’s presidential campaign. The donations turned out to be illegal.
Federal law prohibits employees of the government’s executive branch from endorsing products, but the rule does not apply to the president or the president-elect. Andrew Gilman, chief executive of the crisis communications firm CommCore Consulting Group in a statement to the New York Times asked, “Is there a quid pro quo in the Trump Twitter world, where if you do something nice for him or give him a donation, that you’re likely to get an endorsement tweet?”
Cue a company boycott under the hashtag #GrabYourWallet.
While Bean is one of the company’s 10 board members, the company itself sought to distance itself from her political leanings over the weekend. Shawn Gorman, LL Bean’s executive chairman, released a statement through the company’s Facebook page on Sunday, writing that “we fully acknowledge and respect that some may disagree with the political views of a single member of our 10-person board of directors. LL Bean does not endorse political candidates, take positions on political matters, or make political contributions. Simply put, we stay out of politics.”
Pointedly, while thanking Bean, Trump did not tag the company’s Twitter handle, but that of Bean’s personal lobster business, a point latched onto by Andy Richter, talk-show host Conan O’Brien’s sidekick. Richter took to twitter to posit the following theory:

Kanye Shrug It might be a slow news day, but trust the Donald to keep us on our toes.
