Yesterday, The Indian Express had reported that 1,000 rupee notes would make a comeback in a new avatar. Though there was no official notification from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the article quoted an anonymous official from the central bank who said the new 1,000 rupee note was to be introduced in January but got delayed owing to “the pressing need to supply Rs 500 notes”. The report also suggested that the RBI had “already started production of the new notes”.
However, Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das has denied the news. He added that the issue at hand was to print 500 rupee notes.
Moreover, after the RBI eased the limits on withdrawals for savings accounts, many ATMs have run dry owing to a cash crunch. Das reassured that the central bank would do its best at the earliest.
