Haryana govt rechristens HUDA to avoid confusion

On Thursday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Haryana government renamed Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) to Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP). While it is just a Hindi translation of its former name, according to an Indian Express article, the Haryana government has decided to call it HSVP in Hindi as well as English.

The decision came after a cabinet meeting that was chaired by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who opined that the acronym HUDA used to create confusion because it sounds like the surname of former CM of the state, Bhupinder Singh Hooda. “It was creating confusion. When someone mentions Hooda is being jailed, people think of Pradhikaran (authority),” Health Minister Anil Vij is quoted as saying in a Times of India article. Hooda is currently facing a Central Bureau of Investigation probe in at least three cases – industrial plot allocation in Panchkula, alleged land scam in Manesar and reallotments of institutional plot to Associate Journals Limited in Panchkula.

The former CM called the development ridiculous, calling the government a “badla badli sarkar”. “They will keep changing names of villages, cities and now even authorities. You can imagine their intentions,” Hooda said.

The government had also renamed Gurgaon to Gurugram and Mewat to Nuh in April last year.
