The United States’ Senate on Tuesday appointed Christopher A Wray as the new director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, succeeding James Comey, who was ousted by President Donald Trump during the FBI’s investigation into the collusion between Russia and the US President during last year’s elections.

With a 92-5 vote, Wray, a former federal prosecutor from Atlanta, will take over from the acting FBI director, Andrew G. McCabe.

Talking about Wray’s candidacy, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island and a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said, “Now more than ever, the bureau needs a resolute and independent leader.” Christopher Wray has assured us he can be that leader, the Senator was quoted as saying by The New York Times.

At his Senate confirmation hearing earlier this month the 50-year-old, who was a high-ranking official in President George Bush’s Justice Department and oversaw investigations into corporate fraud, said, he well aware that he was walking into a “political maelstrom”. “I fully understand that this is not a job for the faint of heart,” Wray said, adding, “I can assure this committee, I am not faint of heart.”
