Nearly 67 lakh people in Assam and Bihar have been affected by floods due to incessant rainfall over the last week.

While the first wave of floods in Assam had left nearly 90 dead, second wave affected over 32 lakh people, damaging properties worth over 2,000 crore. “The situation is very critical,” said Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the flood-affected Guwahati on August 1, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and UP CM Yogi Adityanath visited the affected areas on August 14.

Modi, who had announced Rs 100 crore for a study into the annual problem, also announced a Rs 2,000-crore package for rehabilitation and repair of northeastern states. While Home Minister Rajnath Singh has tweeted about the deployment of additional NDRF teams, Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee tweeted, “We are concerned about the flood situation across the country.
