Hyderabad university polls: Alliance for Social Justice defeats ABVP in all six seats

Alliance For Social Justice (ASJ), an alliance of Dalit-Left-Adivasi-Muslim parties swept all six central panel seats of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) students; union. ASJ comprises Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) led along with the Students Federation of India (SFI)-led front contested against Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)alliance and the National Students Union of India (NSUI) for the post of president.

Sreerag P from ASJ, who is currently pursuing his PhD in Regional Studies won the post of President by a margin of 160 votes. Out of the total 3837 votes polled, Anju Rao from NSUI received 872 votes, K Palsaniya from ABVP received 1349 votes and Sreerag won with 1509 votes. “This is the day we have been dreaming about. The entire panel of Dalit-Muslim-Adivasi-Left alliance, the whole panel of progressive forces are united today here to give a message to the BJP government at the centre, to give a message to Appa Rao, that we will not stop this struggle until we get justice,” said Sreerag while addressing students during victory procession at Velivada.

Arif Ahammed from ASJ won the General Secretary post with 1982 votes against Kiran Kumar from ABVP-OBCF who got 1573 votes. The post of joint secretary was won by Mohammed Ashique NP from ASJ with 1872 votes against Maloth Pooja Rani from ABVP-OBCF who secured 1591 votes. Lolam Sravan Kumar from ASJ won the post of Sports Secretary securing 1917 votes against Rupesh Ranjan from ABVP-OBCF who won 1511 votes. The post for Cultural Secretary was won by Gundeti Abhishek from ASJ with 1792 votes against Aarti Nagpal from ABVP-OBCF who won 1707 votes.

The results for the post of Vice-President were delayed owing to the annulment of Lunavath Naresh’s (ASJ) candidature by the Election Commission. However, the results were announced later after the issue was resolved at the Grievance Committee. Lunavath Naresh won by 1884 votes against ABVP-OBCF’s Apoorv Jain who got 1624 votes.

The Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH) also saw the victory of ASJ against ABVP. The ASJ GSCASH candidate for post graduation seat, Charu Nivedha R, won by a tight margin of 878 votes against Neha Rani Patel from ABVP-OBCF who gained 836 votes. In the Integrated course section, Tinanjali Dam from ASJ won with 418 votes against ABVP-OBCF’s P Navya who got 270 votes.

Additionally, it is also worth noting that 1487 votes were polled NOTA (none of the above) as the election witnessed 75 per cent voter turnout.
