On Sunday, Facebook deleted the official page of Postcard News, a website known for generating and spreading fake news.

Newslaundry tried to access its official page and got this response: “This page isn’t available. The link you followed may be broken, or the page may have been removed.”

Late on Sunday night, Aam Aadmi Party’s IT cell head Ankit Lal shared the screenshot of Facebook’s response which said that it has “removed Post Card’s profile from Facebook…”

Postcard News primarily operates from Karnataka, and is infamous for spreading fake news and spewing communal venom.

In the run-up to Karnataka Assembly polls, the web portal has shared multiple problematic reports — capable of disturbing communal harmony. The fact-checking website, AltNews has created a list of fake news stories published by Postcard News.

In March, Postcard News’ founder Mahesh Vikram Hegde was arrested for spreading fake news about a Jain sage being attacked by Muslim youth in Karnataka. He was booked under the Sections 153A, 295A and 120B of the Indian Penal Code.

While Facebook has taken stern action against the web portal, Postcard News’ official twitter handle is still accessible. Will the latter follow suit and delete the web portal’s handle?
