The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 18 arrested an Aurangabad resident, Sachin Prakarao Andure, in the 2013 murder case of Dr Narendra Dabholkar, the Mumbai Mirror reported.

According to the report, the arrests were based on a tip-off Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), which had on August 10, arrested Vaibhav Raut, Sharad Kalaskar and Sudhanva Gondhalekar from Nallasopara on terror charges. It was during the interrogations that Kalaskar had confessed to being part of Dabholkar’s murder, the report states. It adds that “Kalaskar had also told the ATS that Andure had shot at Dabholkar.”

Pune Mirror reports that it was the Karnataka special investigation team, which is probing journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh’s murder, that had shared intelligence about some individuals with the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad. This had ultimately led to the arrest of Raut, Kalaskar and Gondhalekar.

The report quotes the Inspector General of Police BK Singh, who is heading the SIT in the Lankesh murder case, as saying, “For me, it was a typical murder case, but we were investigating from every angle. Also, looking at the way all these people were murdered, it is obvious that they are interconnected. During the investigation, we got some contact numbers which we found suspicious. We shared them with the Maharashtra ATS and they investigated the information further.”

The report also quotes the CBI investigating officer in the Dabholkar case, R Singh, as saying, “There is a constant exchange of information between the teams. This information was shared by the Karnataka cops, following which the arrests were made at our end.”

Dabholkar was murdered in Pune on August 20, 2013.
