Journalist and analyst Abhijit Iyer-Mitra was arrested in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday after a case was filed against him for tweets he had posted over a year ago. He was booked under Sections 294, 295A, 153A, 500, and 506 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act. Iyer-Mitra had earlier been arrested in another case by the Delhi police in September.

While some reports said he had been arrested for comments made during a conversation about roshogulla, his lawyer Nikhil Mehra posted on Twitter:

Iyer-Mitra’s bail plea was rejected and he has been remanded to 14-day judicial custody.

He was arrested hours after he appeared before a House Committee in the Odisha Assembly to apologise for earlier remarks. Leader of the Opposition Narasingh Mishra had said, “Abhijit Iyer-Mitra admitted to the charges levelled against him and offered an unconditional apology for his ‘stupidity’. He has been directed to depose before the Committee and submit an affidavit in this regard.” Iyer-Mitra will have to reappear in front of the Committee on November 2 and submit the affidavit.

Iyer-Mitra had earlier been arrested by the Odisha police in Delhi on September 20 for allegedly derogatory remarks he made on social media about the Sun Temple in Konark. A Delhi court had granted him limited bail. Later, on October 4, the Supreme Court refused to grant him regular bail.
