Home Minister Amit Shah made an announcement in Rajya Sabha today seeking to revoke Article 370 of the Constitution that grants special status to Jammu & Kashmir. As soon as Shah made the announcement, the Upper House broke into a commotion making it impossible to understand Shah’s address. However, he made it clear that Article 370 will be considered null and void as soon as the President gives his assent and a notification will be made available on all platforms.

Meanwhile, a statement of ‘Objects & Reasons’ announced that the state of Jammu and Kashmir would be divided into two Union Territories (UT). The Ladakh Division will be given the status of a UT and will function without a legislature. Meanwhile, J&K will be a UT with a legislature.

Soon after Shah’s announcement, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti condemned the “unliateral” move as “illegal and unconstitutional”.

BJP leader Ram Madhav called it a “glorious day”.

PDP MPs Mir Fayaz and Nazir Ahmed Laway asked to go out of Rajya Sabha because they attempted to tear the Constitution, reports ANI.
