Press Council of India announces winners of National Awards for Excellence in Journalism

The Press Council of India announced the winners of the 2019 National Awards for Excellence in Journalism yesterday.

Ghulab Kothari, chairman of Rajasthan Patrika Private Limited, won the Raja Ram Mohan Roy award for contributions to journalism.

In the Rural Journalism category, the award was shared by India Today‘s group editorial director Raj Chengappa and Dainik Bhaskar correspondent Sanjay Saini. The Indian Express‘s senior editor Anuradha Mascarenhas and Deshbandhu‘s Ruby Sarkar won for Gender-Based Reporting.

Saurabh Duggal from Hindustan Times won for Sports Reporting. Mathrubhumi sub-editor Anu Abrahim and Dainik Jagran‘s senior reporter Shiv Swaroop Awasthi shared the award for Developmental Reporting. In the Financial Reporting category, The Indian Express‘s associate editor Sandeep Singh and special correspondent Krishn Kaushik won the award for their series of investigative reports on the conflict of interest in the business dealings of then ICICI managing director and CEO Chanda Kochhar’s family members.

In photojournalism, Mathrubhumi‘s senior photographer PG Unnikrishnan and news photographer Akhil ES won in the Single News Picture category, while the Photo Feature award was presented to Sipra Das, consulting editor (photography) at India Empire magazine and Parliamentarian magazine.
