He dissects the ‘hatred’ that saturated Savarkar and what lies behind the resurrection of the Hindutva icon.
The subject of Arun Shourie’s latest book is a “little man” with an "exaggerated opinion of himself”. His words, not ours.
In his book The New Icon: Savarkar And The Facts, the author and former BJP minister dissects the nature of the “hatred” that saturated VD Savarkar and its origins. To Arun, the Hindutva icon was fascinated with violence even though he never participated in it.
In this interview with Newslaundry’s Abhinandan Sekhri, Arun explains what pushed him into studying Savarkar in the first place.
“There's a concern with what is happening today, which led me to Savarkar…Secondly, today, most apparent is the determination with which the current dispensation is trying to erase Gandhiji,” he says. And one device to erase Gandhi, he adds, is the resurrection of persons like Savarkar.
