A parliamentary panel has sought details from the Narendra Modi government about “contemplated action” to ban social media influencers and platforms allegedly “working against the interest of the country” after the Pahalgam terror attack.

“Some social media influencers and social media platforms in the country seem to be working against the interest of the country, which is likely to incite violence,” wrote the Standing Committee on Information Technology to the ministries of Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and Information Technology.

In a letter to the secretaries of the two ministries, the panel has requested details of such decisions under IT Act 2000 and Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. It has sought the information by Thursday.

The letter comes amid an India ban on several Pakistani social media accounts as well as FIRs against certain Indian social media influencers.
