The Bharatiya Janata Party on April 10 admitted that NaMo TV, a channel named after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is run by its IT Cell, Indian Express reported. “NaMo TV is a feature of NaMo app which is run by BJP IT cell. The party has taken slots on DTH for which provisions are there to show it [NaMo TV],” BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya was quoted as saying.

Indian Express also quoted unnamed officials of the Delhi Chief Electoral Office as saying that the Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC) had only certified NaMo’s TV logo. The officials were quoted as saying that pre-aired speeches of Prime Minister Narendra Modi which were being aired on NaMo TV were not advertisements. According to the officials, the poll panel did not have the mandate to certify such content. “Top officials at the Delhi Chief Electoral Office said that the Media Certification and Monitoring Committee had ‘only certified’ the NaMo TV logo, and it was not their ‘mandate’ to certify the content since it contained pre-aired speeches of Prime Minister Narendra Modi which were not advertisements,” the report stated.

The report also quoted an unnamed commission official as saying that the commission’s order on NaMo TV is expected on Thursday. You can read more about NaMo TV here.
