Twitter to shut down its video app Vine

On Thursday, Twitter announced that it is shutting down Vine, its six-second video sharing app. The three-year-old app saw a slew of short comedic videos many of which developed millions of followers. With other social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat launching their own versions of video apps, many of its users began to leave the platform.

The company announced that older Vine videos would still be available on vine.co but the app will be phased out over the next few months. “Nothing is happening to the apps, website or your Vines today. We value you, your Vines and are going to do this the right way. You’ll be able to access and download your Vines. We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made,” the company said in a blog post.

Vine’s founder Rus Yusuvov tweeted to Twitter asking them not to sell the company:

Twitter’s decision was met by an offer by the adult video site Pornhub who said that clips “of porn in six seconds is more than enough time for most people to enjoy themselves.”
