SC orders removal of Anurag Thakur, Ajay Shirke from BCCI

Earlier this morning, a Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India TS Thakur hit everyone for a six when it ordered the removal of Anurag Thakur and Ajay Shirke from their positions of chief and general secretary of Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) respectively. The apex court also said that the recommendations of the Lodha Committee, which have been the subject of much wrangling last year, should be implemented.

The Supreme Court–appointed Justice RM Lodha Committee was set up to clean up the BCCI, after its highly popular T-20 league was hit by spot-fixing allegations. Among the Committee’s recommendations were that no office bearer should be allowed to serve for more than two consecutive terms, and that each state should only be allowed one vote. BCCI had been given until December 3 to implement the recommendations but it had pleaded that this wasn’t possible.

Speaking to Times Now, Shirke said that he accepted the judgement and that allegations of “musical chairs” in BCCI and the board being confrontational were media concoctions. Shirke has also said to the media that he regretted nothing.

Aside from removing Thakur and Shirke, SC has ordered that a committee of administrators should look after BCCI’s affairs for now. The senior-most BCCI vice-president will act as president while the joint-secretary will act as secretary. Gopal Subramanium and Fali Nariman will now suggest names for an interim Committee. NDTV has reported that all BCCI office-bearers and state associations will have to give an undertaking to abide by the Lodha Committee recommendations. Those heads of state associations who did not agree to implement the reforms suggested by the Lodha Committee would also be removed.

The next hearing will be on January 19, when the names of the interim board — names for which will be suggested by Gopal Subramanium and Fali Nariman — will be decided.
