The Mumbai Police Cyber Cell has lodged a first information report against satire group All India Bakchod for “allegedly” insulting Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. The group had posted a meme of Modi’s lookalike with a Snapchat dog filter.

Mumbai JCP Sanjay Saxena confirmed the filing of the FIR to Hindustan Times.  The controversy began on Thursday after the group took a dig at Modi by posting the ‘Wanderlust’ meme on Facebook. The jibe was with reference to Modi’s frequent foreign trips, according to reports.

Responding to a tweet by Delhi’s Reetesh Maheshwari, the Mumbai Police said:

The FIR was lodged after “due legal consultation”, the police was quoted as saying by NDTV. The group has been charged with defamation and registered under the IT Act as well, an offence punishable by up to three years in jail, besides a Rs 5 lakh fine.

This is not the first time that AIB is facing such charges. Earlier, an FIR was registered against them on charges of obscenity for a roast including actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor.

Last year Tanmay Bhat, one of the members of the group, was slammed by people online for making a Snapchat video insulting Lata Mangeshkar and Sachin Tendulkar.

The Facebook post and tweet have since been removed. Responding to the trolls, Bhat tweeted that AIB will keep making jokes and deleting them, if necessary.

Newslaundry tried reaching out to Rohan Joshi, an AIB member. This post will be updated once we have the group’s response. Newslaundry also reached to Mumbai Police’s cyber cell division, which declined comment.
